-------------------------

The New Castle District officially opened for business in October of 1978.

In 1979 merger talks had started between the N&W and Southern. The Southern desperately needed a direct route to Chicago to connect the Southeast to the Midwest.

During 1981 the northern portion of the New Castle District from Muncie to Ft. Wayne Indiana was brought up to mainline standards. Trains then could be routed from Cincinnati to Ft. Wayne then onto the Nickel Plate Line from Ft. Wayne to Chicago and from Ft. Wayne to Decatur Illinois and Kansas City on the former Wabash.

In 1982 the 60mph 178 mile railroad was complete between Cincinnati and Ft. Wayne....a far cry from the decaying branches of the previous six years. Now Norfolk Southern had a direct route between Atlanta and Chicago.

In 1986 trains could now be routed from Atlanta to the Motor City Detroit through Ft. Wayne.
