DVD-St Clair Tunnel collection |
 |
Rail fans, engineering buffs and "kids" of all ages will enjoy this new-release DVD collection on constructing the St. Clair Rail Tunnel, North America's largest international underwater rail tunnel and one of the largest construction projects of the decade in North America.
Dedicated on May 5, 1995, the new tunnel replaced the original one built in 1890 and connects CN rail lines under the St. Clair River between Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, Ontario.
Included in the DVD are Engineering Review and Building the Tunnel. Both videos tell the full story of the tunnel, featuring unique footage of the excavation and mining operations conducted under the river with a three-story-high tunnel boring machine named "Excalibore." Highlights include dynamic shots of the "breakthrough" of the huge machine as it emerged into Port Huron and a ride into the century-old tunnel.
Building the Tunnel is the original CN souvenir video produced for a general audience. It is entertaining with numerous music/video segments, designed to appeal to viewers of all ages.
Engineering Review is a 40-minute documentary offering more in-depth information on the methods, materials, design and engineering challenges of building the tunnel. It includes a full, summit-to-summit, 60mph midnight test run through the completed tunnel.
As the official documentary filmmakers for Canadian National and the St. Clair Tunnel Construction Company, Michigan filmmakers Beverly and David Lang produced, scripted, shot and edited both videos.
New! Bonus Segments:
Rail Superhighway
This interesting video begins with an historical overview of rail transportation illustrated with vintage film and photos of steam trains and depots. It goes on to explain why the new tunnel was needed, and concludes with a look at the modern technologies that take rail transportation into the 21st Century.
A Final Ride Through the Old Tunnel Take one of the last rides through the first St. Clair Tunnel, built in 1891. Believe us, it's not at high speed, but it sure is interesting.
Scenes from CN's Inaugural Celebration CN brought employees and their families to Sarnia for "family fun day" which began with a train ride over the CN lines to Port Huron followed by a trip through the tunnel on a VIA train. This video segment includes shots of the beautiful Blue Water Special, twenty pristine passenger cars pulled by a shiny new engine framed by a brilliant blue sky. Some railfans want the DVD just for this!
The Tunnel Collection got rave reviews and so did Twinning the Blue Water Bridge and Second Span Blue Water Bridge.
