BUILDING THE D&RG VOLUME 1
In this first program of Building the Denver & Rio Grande Narrow Gauge, we'll cover the finishing of the basement railroad room to accommodate this very large HO scale narrow gauge railroad. Then we'll show you how we painted and blended the sky blue backdrop, and added artwork by our artist friend Pat Lemmerman.
Next, we'll begin the benchwork construction and layout of track for our very large Durango Yard. We'll also install a Walthers Turntable and scratch build the Durango Roundhouse.
Our yard contains Dual gauge track and turnouts ala the 1930's in the real Durango- The dual gauge track required a dual gauge turntable as well! The Los Animas River runs nearby, so we'll show you how we added this important detail for the length of the entire yard.
The town of Durango will be roughed out, including a space for the Durango station, we'll also add the reverse loop around the back of the roundhouse and some "swishes" to allow the dual gauge track to go from three rail to four rail so both standard gauge and narrow gauge engines can use the turntable.
We'll also add the ash pit near where our coaling tower will be placed. We'll add scenery to blend the backdrop into the yard, including some beautiful Cottonwood trees along the river. At the end of the yard, we'll build a small timber trestle to cross the river.

Finally, we'll construct a control panel to hold the toggle switches that power our switch machines in the yard. Lastly, we'll hook up a PTC Turntable controller for automatic alignment of our turntable to all those tracks.

BUILDING THE D&RG VOLUME 2
In volume 2 of this series, we’ll cover the building of the complete HO scale Graden Flower Mill. Next we’ll tackle the coal pit and the ramp to the pit in our Durango Yard. We’ll finish the scenery along the river at Durango, including some great looking Cottonwood trees..and we’ll add rocks and shrubs to blend our scenery to the back drop... and bushes and shrubs along, and in the river.
The Durango Yard is quite large, and we’ll cover all of it with more cinder ballast, and finish the scenery along the backdrop. Lastly, we’ll build a concrete street for the town of Durango..and we’ll ballast the track in front of the station that leads out of Durango.

BUILDING THE D&RG VOLUME 3
In this program, we'll first lay out the yard for Chama right on the floor. Then we'll construct the bench-work for Chama along two walls around the corner from our scene of Gato. We'll build a turntable kit and modify the bridge for narrow gauge track.
The next step is to construct the roadbed between Gato and Chama, Plaster gauze will be added to the scene, and zip texturing comes next. Then, we'll scratch build the Chama Roundhouse and machine shop.
The roundhouse and turntable module will be dropped into the newly completed bench-work. Shrubs, bushes and ground cover will be added to the scene leading to Chama. We'll scratch build the Chama station from commercial wood, plastic sheet and windows.
Next we'll set the station in place and scenic around the structure. Chama had an oil facility served by tank cars, and we'll scratch build that next. The yard will be blended with the painted backdrop and large Cotton Wood trees. Shrubs, grasses and more Cotton Wood trees will be added along the wall.
We'll take a ride between Durango and Chama over our newly extended sections.....finally arriving at Chama.

BUILDING THE D&RG VOLUME 4
In Volume 4 of this series, we’ll finally complete the Rio Grande Narrow Gauge taking you up to and completing the line to Cumbres. We’ll lay out the woodwork from Chama to Cumbres, and construct all the benchwork necessary.
Then we’ll build some bridges to take us over the Chama River. Next, we’ll lay track up to Cumbres, which will include a passing siding and a tunnel. The large snowshed that appeared at Cumbres in the working days of the Grande will be scratched in place.
Our artist, Pat Lemmerman, will paint some backdrops for our new scene out of Chama. There is a small lake at Cumbres, and we’ll build that next.
Finally, the rugged scenery will be constructed up to Cumbres, to create the high elevations and the mountains surrounding the area. We’ll complete our program by running some trains for a live meet at Cumbres.
